The modern beekeeping work demands various different tools and equipment that enables the beekeepers to keep the colonies safe and efficient. Such tools are useful in ensuring that the beekeepers and the bees are well protected and the honey production can be sustainable.
The beehive is one of the most significant equipment. The current hives are normally constructed out of wooden boxes that are arranged vertically and have removable frames on which the bees develop honeycombs. These frames enable the beekeepers to examine the colony without interfering with the natural set up of the hive.
Protective clothing: this is necessary when working with bees. When attending to the hives, beekeepers usually don protective suits, gloves, and veils in order to avoid being stung by the bees. The veil is of significance especially since it covers the face and neck which could be mistakenly stung by defensive bees.
The smoker is another tool which is vital. A smoker makes cool smoke which is carefully blown in the hive and is checked. The smoke serves to relax the bees and temporarily lessens the defensive nature of the bees and allowed the beekeeper to safely go around the hive.
Another tool used by beekeepers is a hive tool a small metal tool used to hive parts apart. The bees tend to use propolis, a resin secreted on plants, as a sealant on holes in the hive. Hive tool is utilized to split frames and boxes without breaking the frames of the hive.
Beekeepers also have honey extractors when it is time to harvest honey. The honeycomb frames are rotated in these machines to extract the honey using centrifuge force without destroying the comb that can be used again by bees.
Other equipment used is the feeders to supply the supplemental food to bees at times when the nectar is limited such as during seasons. Water can also be put close to the hives to aid the hydration requirement of a colony.
